The centre of Friuli Venezia Giulia Province, Trieste has medieval origins, being located between mountains and the Adriatic Sea. You can visit historical edifices as the Roman Basilica, the fortress, the Cathedral with its refined mosaics. There are newer neoclassical buildings from the Hapsburg era (Jugend architectural style). Not very far away from the city centre, tourists must visit the romantic Miramare Castle, surrounded by luxurious gardens and drained by the marine natural reservation protected by the WWF. Another attraction of Trieste is Grotta Gigante (The Giant Cave), the largest cave in the world opened to the public.
